RESUMO

To assess oritavancin in vitro activity against clinically relevant Gram-positive pathogens in European (EU) hospitals, a total of 51,531 consecutive and unique clinical isolates collected in 2010-2019 were evaluated. All isolates were tested by CLSI broth microdilution methods. The key resistance phenotypes differed considerably between Eastern Europe (E-EU) and Western Europe (W-EU), respectively: methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus 27.7%/22.9%; multidrug resistant (MDR) S. aureus, 19.7%/15.2%; MR coagulase-negative staphylococci, 77.3%/61.9%; vancomycin-resistant enterococci (E. faecium), 44.2%/20.9%; and MDR E. faecium, 63.8%/55.4%. There were no substantive differences in oritavancin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for the different species/organism groups over time or by EU region. Oritavancin inhibited 99.9% and 99.1% of all S. aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci at 0.12 mg/L, respectively, and all isolates of E. faecalis and E. faecium at ≤0.5 mg/L. Oritavancin susceptibility rates against ß-hemolytic and Viridans group streptococci isolates were 98.1% and 99.4%, respectively. Oritavancin had potent activity in vitro against this contemporary collection of European Gram-positive isolates from 2010 to 2019.

RESUMO

Piezo-optic and thermo-optic coefficients are important material properties that play a critical role in the design and optimization of many optical devices. The ability to accurately measure and control these coefficients is essential for achieving high performance and reliability in a wide range of applications. In this article, we use the optical detection of the ultrasound-induced thermal lens effect to investigate these properties for water at low temperatures. The results show that the anomalous behavior of water around 4°C is easily observed. The thermal lens method is used to determine the temperature dependence of the piezo-optic and thermo-optic coefficients.

The biological activities of Porphyra sp., Gracilaria gracilis, Alaria esculenta and Saccharina latissima extracts prepared by enzymatic and ball milling-assisted methods and hot water were evaluated. Enzyme-assisted methods allowed the highest extraction yields. Alcalase-assisted extraction (EAA) was the most effective in the recovery of polyphenolic compounds and Porphyra sp. had the highest content. The efficiency of flavonoids extraction was highly dependent on the used method. Globally, Porphyra sp. and EAA extracts exhibited the highest antioxidant and chelating activities. The highest α-amylase inhibitory activity was determined in HW Porphyra sp. extract while EAA A. esculenta extract had the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The highest ACE inhibitory activity was obtained in EAA from S. latissima. None of the extracts showed antimicrobial activity against the tested bacteria. The results showed that Porphyra sp. and S. latissima are potentially useful as ingredient in functional foods and nutraceuticals.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of oral health conditions on the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and compare with children and adolescents without CP. METHODS: This was a paired cross-sectional study, consisting of 121 children and adolescents with CP and 121 without CP, aged 6 to 14 years. Caregivers filled a socioeconomic-demographic and the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ). Physical examination of the oral cavity assessed the dental caries experience, need for treatment, consequences of untreated dental caries, presence of dental trauma, bruxism and malocclusion. A descriptive analysis and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05) were performed. Variables with p values ≤ 0.20 in the bivariate analysis were included in the adjusted model analysis. Variables with a p value < 0.05 remained in the final Poisson Regression model. RESULTS: Caries experience had a negative impact on the quality of life of both groups, with and without CP. Presence of gastroesophageal reflux and difficulty to opening the mouth also had a negative impact on the OHRQoL of the group with CP. CONCLUSION: Children and adolescents with CP suffered a greater negative impact on OHRQoL than individuals without CP. Difficulty in opening the mouth and the presence of GER had a negative effect on the quality of life of individuals with CP, while dental caries had a negative impact on the OHRQoL of children and adolescents of both groups.
